Government Debt and Deficits In Canada: A Macro Simulation Analysis Staff Working Paper 1995-4 Tiff Macklem, David Rose, Robert Tetlow This paper examines the macroeconomic implications of rising government debt in Canada and the short-run costs and long-run benefits of stemming the rise. The discussion begins with an evaluation of the long-run consequences of increasing government indebtedness, first based on the simple arithmetic of the government's long-run budget constraint, and then based on simulations of […] Content Type(s): Staff research, Staff working papers Research Topic(s): Fiscal policy

Aggregate Fluctuations and the Role of Trade Credit Staff Working Paper 2017-37 Lin Shao In an economy where production takes place in multiple stages and is subject to financial frictions, how firms finance intermediate inputs matters for aggregate outcomes. Selection of the Truncation Lag in Structural VARs (or VECMs) with Long-Run Restrictions Staff Working Paper 1995-9 Alain DeSerres, Alain Guay authors examine the issue of lag-length selection in the context of a structural vector autoregression (VAR) and a vector error-correction model with long-run restrictions. First, they show that imposing long-run restrictions implies, in general, a moving-average (MA) component in the stationary multivariate representation. Then they examine the sensitivity of estimates of the permanent and transitory […] Content Type(s): Staff research, Staff working papers Research Topic(s): Econometric and statistical methods
The Term Structures of Loss and Gain Uncertainty Staff Working Paper 2020-19 Bruno Feunou, Ricardo Lopez Aliouchkin, Roméo Tedongap, Lai Xu We investigate the uncertainty around stock returns at different investment horizons. Since a return is either a loss or a gain, we categorize return uncertainty into two components—loss uncertainty and gain uncertainty. We then use these components to evaluate investment. On the Wedge Between the PPI and CPI Inflation Indicators Staff Working Paper 2022-5 Shang-Jin Wei, Yinxi Xie We find that the CPI and PPI inflation indexes co-moved strongly throughout the late 20th century, but their correlation has fallen substantially since the early 2000s. We offer a structural explanation for this divergence based on the growth of global supply chains since 2000. This finding offers a unique perspective for the future design of optimal monetary policy.
