About the Bank’s interest earnings

The Bank of Canada’s balance sheet reflects the unique role it plays as Canada’s central bank. It is different from the balance sheets of other financial institutions—the assets and liabilities on the Bank’s balance sheet are intended to support its core functions rather than to generate profit.

Our COVID-19 response: Large-scale asset purchases

The Bank of Canada has taken many actions to support Canadians since the COVID-19 pandemic struck. These include large-scale asset purchases—buying a substantial amount of government bonds and other financial assets. Our purchases serve two purposes. They help key financial markets work properly, and they can help increase spending in the economy. This leads to more employment and stronger economic growth.

Beginning today, the Bank of Canada is inviting nominations for the fifth annual Law Enforcement Award of Excellence for Counterfeit Deterrence. This award recognizes police officers, employees, or volunteers of a Canadian law-enforcement agency who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and initiative in counterfeiting deterrence and prevention.

COVID-19 and bond market liquidity: alert, isolation and recovery

The disruption due to COVID-19 reverberated through the bond markets in three phases. In the first phase, dealers met the rising demand for liquidity. In the second, dealers reduced the supply of liquidity, and trading conditions worsened significantly. Finally, the market returned to relative stability following several interventions by the Bank of Canada.

CARR publishes its recommendations for transitioning loans from CDOR to CORRA and provides a “no new CDOR or BA loan” milestone

Today, the Canadian Alternative Reference Rate working group (CARR) published a set of documents that will help support the transition of the Canadian loan market from the Canadian Dollar Offered Rate (CDOR) to the Canadian Overnight Repo Rate Average (CORRA).
