Capitalizing on the Commodity Boom: the Role of Monetary Policy

We are experiencing a commodity super cycle. Throughout the current boom, the scale of price increases has been higher, and the range of affected commodities broader, than in previous upturns. Since 2002, grain and oilseed prices have more than doubled, base metals prices have tripled, and oil prices have quadrupled.

In 2014, inflation remained very close to target, the economy grew at a reasonable pace and there was no material increase in financial stability risks. Nonetheless, the economy still struggled against significant global headwinds. The 2014 Annual Report highlights the Bank of Canada’s key activities and achievements over the year, including a message from Governor Stephen S. Poloz, Management’s Discussion and Analysis, and the 2014 Financial Statements.

Financial System Review - June 2016

The Financial System Review concludes that the overall level of risk to Canada’s financial system is largely unchanged from six months ago. While household vulnerabilities have moved higher, the ongoing economic recovery in Canada means that the overall risk remains the same. The Bank highlights three vulnerabilities in the financial system: the elevated level of household indebtedness, imbalances in some regional housing markets and the fragility of liquidity in fixed-income markets.

Monetary Policy Report – January 2012

The Canadian economy is estimated to have grown by 2.4 per cent in 2011, and is projected to grow by 2.0 per cent in 2012, and 2.8 per cent in 2013, returning to full capacity by the third quarter of 2013. Total CPI inflation is expected to return to the 2 per cent target by the 3rd quarter of 2013.
