Nicolas Bédard is an Economist in the Canadian Economic Analysis Department. Based in the Quebec Regional Office in Montréal, he conducts research and analysis on economic and sectoral developments in the province. He also contributes to the Business Outlook Survey and the Canadian Survey of Consumer Expectations. Nicolas holds a master’s degree in applied economics from HEC Montréal.

Measuring household financial stress in Canada using consumer surveys

We use data from the Canadian Survey of Consumer Expectations to understand how households are coping with high inflation and high interest rates. We build a subjective measure of financial stress and find that the level of stress is at a historical high but remains manageable for most households.
