Unveil of Canada’s new vertical $20 bank note

OTTAWA – On Thursday, September 3, 2026, Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem, along with some special guests, will unveil the design of the new $20 bank note featuring a portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.

Embargo

At 11:30 (ET), members of the media will have an opportunity to meet with experts to find out more about the theme and security features of the note. Samples of the note will be available for viewing by journalists, photographers and TV crews.

All media wishing to attend the embargo period or unveiling must arrive by 11:30 (ET).

Information gathered during the embargo period may be used freely in news reports and commentaries, provided it is not attributed to the Bank or its officers.

Photos and/or video recording from the embargo period cannot be published or posted until the bank note is officially unveiled at approximately 13:20 (ET). Bank of Canada personnel will indicate clearly when the embargo lifts and media can publish or post photos/recordings/coverage about the note.

For security reasons, all media wishing to attend the event must register with the Bank of Canada in advance. Broadcast media and still photographers will be allotted space on a first-come, first-served basis, through advance registration. To register, please contact Media Relations by noon (ET) on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Distribution

The Governor’s remarks and a press release with more information will be published on the Bank’s website at approximately 13:20 (ET).

Once the note is unveiled, details, including images, will be available on the Bank’s website and social media platforms.
