https://www.bankofcanada.ca/2016/03/staff-working-paper-2016-14/
This paper imagines a world in which countries are on the Bitcoin standard, a monetary system in which all media of exchange are Bitcoin or are backed by it. The paper explores the similarities and differences between the Bitcoin standard and the gold standard and describes the media of exchange that would exist under the Bitcoin standard.2016-03-31T08:27:25+00:00enA Bitcoin Standard: Lessons from the Gold Standard2016-03-31Digital currencies and fintechExchange ratesFinancial servicesInflation and pricesStaff Working Paper 2016-14https://www.bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/swp2016-14.pdfA Bitcoin Standard: Lessons from the Gold StandardWarren E. Shocks to a currency area can and often do have asymmetric impacts on its regions that, in the absence of perfect labour mobility, lead to gaps in relative labour market performance. Witness, for example, the effects of the 2008/09 recession and subsequent financial crisis in Europe on the dispersion of employment rates across the euro area – and to a lesser extent the United States.2016-03-30T12:10:53+00:00enCanadian Labour Market Dispersion: Mind the (Shrinking) Gap2016-03-30Government Corruption and Foreign Direct Investment Under the Threat of Expropriation

Foreign investment is often constrained by two forms of political risk: expropriation and corruption. We develop a model to analyze the link between financial leverage, worker pay structure and the risk of job termination. Contrary to the conventional view, we show that even in the absence of any agency problem among workers, variable pay can be optimal despite workers being risk averse and firms risk neutral.2016-03-22T11:27:10+00:00enCapital Structure, Pay Structure and Job Termination2016-03-22Financial institutionsLabour marketsStaff Working Paper 2016-12https://www.bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/swp2016-12.pdfCapital Structure, Pay Structure and Job TerminationJason AllenJames R. Recent sharp declines in commodity prices and the simultaneous depreciation of the Canadian dollar (CAD) relative to the U.S. dollar (USD) have rekindled an interest in the relationship between commodity prices and the CAD-USD exchange rate.2016-03-14T08:49:26+00:00enPredictive Ability of Commodity Prices for the Canadian Dollar2016-03-14A Framework in Search of an Optimal Margining Policy for Official Institutions: The Canadian Experience

This paper proposes a novel methodology for identifying episodes of strong capital flows based on a regime-switching model. In comparison with the existing literature, a key advantage of our methodology is to estimate capital flow regimes without the need for context- and sample-specific assumptions.2016-03-10T10:34:27+00:00enThe Dynamics of Capital Flow Episodes2016-03-10Econometric and statistical methodsInternational financial marketsInternational topicsMonetary policy and uncertaintyStaff Working Paper 2016-9https://www.bankofcanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/swp2016-9.pdfThe Dynamics of Capital Flow EpisodesChristian FriedrichPierre GuérinMarch 2016FF2F21F3F32GG1G11
