Over the past couple of years, there has been considerable debate about productivity and our standard of living in Canada. For the most part, the discussion of these issues has been useful, but at times it has been somewhat confusing.1999-12-06T13:17:26+00:00The Canadian economy, productivity, and our standard of living1999-12-06Gordon ThiessenRelease of the Monetary Policy Report

Good morning. The Bank of Canada has just released its tenth Monetary Policy Report. This morning, we also raised our target for the overnight interest rate by 1/4 of one percentage point to 4 3/4 per cent. This follows a similar increase yesterday in the U.S. Federal Funds rate to 5 ½ per cent. Monetary policy actions take a relatively long time to affect the economy and inflation—anywhere between 12 to 24 months. Because of this, central banks must always look ahead and must put in place today the monetary conditions that are needed to help keep the economy on a sustainable path down the road. By 'sustainable' I mean a situation where economic growth and job creation are not at risk from rising inflation.1999-11-02T13:02:18+00:00The Challenges for Canadian Monetary Policy in the Year 20001999-11-02Gordon ThiessenCanada's economy as the year 2000 approaches

It is always a pleasure to return and speak to people in my home province. This time, we are here for a meeting of the Bank of Canada's Board of Directors. Once a year, our Board meets outside Ottawa, in a different part of the country. This year, we are delighted to be in Regina.1999-09-23T12:43:03+00:00Canada's economy as the year 2000 approaches1999-09-23Gordon ThiessenCanadian economic performance at the end of the twentieth century

As the curtain comes down on the twentieth century and we move on to the next millennium, it is difficult to resist the temptation to be both retrospective and prospective.1999-06-02T12:30:46+00:00Canadian economic performance at the end of the twentieth century1999-06-02Gordon ThiessenOpening Statement before the Standing Committee on Finance of the House of Commons

It is always a pleasure to appear before your Committee following the publication of our Monetary Policy Report. We released our ninth Report last Wednesday. The Bank of Canada began publishing these Reports on a semi-annual basis four years ago, as part of our effort to increase the transparency and accountability of the Bank's conduct of monetary policy.1999-05-26T11:45:21+00:00Opening Statement before the Standing Committee on Finance of the House of Commons1999-05-26Gordon ThiessenRelease of the Monetary Policy Report

This morning we released our ninth Monetary Policy Report. The economic and financial situation is much improved since our previous Report in November. Financial markets have steadied in Southeast Asia, and prospects are good for a gradual recovery there. In Brazil, the authorities have taken major steps to address their difficulties. Overall, global financial markets […]1999-05-19T10:54:28+00:00Release of the Monetary Policy Report1999-05-19Gordon ThiessenGlobal financial turbulence and the Canadian economy

The world economy and Canada have had to navigate some difficult straits in the past couple of years. But we have made it through. And considering the tide from the Asian financial crisis that washed around the world, the Canadian economy has coped better this time around than in the past.1999-05-04T11:23:14+00:00Global financial turbulence and the Canadian economy1999-05-04Gordon ThiessenOpening Statement before the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce

I am delighted to be with you this evening to celebrate the 35th annual meeting of the Mennonite Savings and Credit Union. On this occasion, I propose to speak about the Canadian economy and monetary policy. But given this audience, I thought I might start with some remarks on the future of the Canadian financial sector - a subject that has certainly grabbed its share of headlines over the past year!1999-03-22T10:54:01+00:00Financial sector reform, the economy, and monetary policy1999-03-22Gordon Thiessen
