Colin Dodds

Board of Directors Member

J. Colin Dodds was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Bank of Canada in October 2013.

Born and educated in the United Kingdom, Dr. Dodds has an academic career that has spanned more than 40 years, teaching financial economics, investments and portfolio management and corporate finance. He holds BA, BSc, MA and PhD degrees and has taught at universities across the United Kingdom, Asia and Canada.

Dr. Dodds served for 15 years as President and Vice-Chancellor of Saint Mary’s University (SMU), where he was previously Vice-President, Academic and Research, and Dean of the Sobey School of Business. Now President Emeritus, he continues to teach international finance to graduate students at SMU and is invited to speak at many community events. He has published many books, journal articles and conference papers, with a particular focus on financial markets.

Dr. Dodds sits on the boards of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, the World University Service of Canada and the Board of Research Advisors for the Atlantic Institute of Market Studies. He is a former Chair of the Board of the Canadian Bureau of International Education, the Canadian Scholarship Trust, the Greater Halifax Partnership, the Better Business Bureau Serving the Atlantic Provinces, the Association of Atlantic Universities and the Council of Nova Scotia University Presidents.

In 2010, Dr. Dodds was named one of Atlantic Canada’s Top 50 CEOs and was inducted into Atlantic Business Magazine’s Top 50 CEO Hall of Fame. He was awarded the 2014 Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Excellence in Public Administration in Nova Scotia, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals.

Dr. Dodds is an active member of the Pugwash Park Commission and of the Pugwash movement more broadly; he has served as a judge for many national scholarship programs and is on the selection committee for the Investment Industry Hall of Fame. He is also a member of many professional associations, including the Chartered Management Institute in the United Kingdom. He served on the federal government’s Advisory Panel on Canada’s International Education Strategy and the Nova Scotia Electoral Boundaries Commission and currently sits on the Campaign Cabinet for the Discovery Centre, Ross Farm and the Black Loyalist Cultural Centre.
