Biographical note

Jack Selody

Mr. Selody was appointed Adviser to the Governor in 2003. His responsibilities are in the area of domestic economic, financial, and monetary policy analysis. He is also the Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Bank of Canada Review and the Information Technology Review Committee.

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Mr. Selody graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts degree (Honours Economics) in 1975. He then attended the University of Western Ontario, where he received a Master's degree in Economics in 1976 and a PhD in Economics in 1979.

Mr. Selody joined the Bank as an Economist in the Research Department in 1979. He became Assistant Chief of the Special Studies Division of that department in 1984, Assistant Chief of the Forecasting and Special Studies Division in 1986, and Deputy Chief of the department in 1988. In 1992, Mr. Selody moved to the Department of Monetary and Financial Analysis as Deputy Chief, and was appointed Chief in 1996.

Mr. Selody has worked on a variety of topics related to monetary stability since joining the Bank. Early in his career, he worked on the link between inflation and productivity, and on building macroeconomic models. He has also worked on the issue of how monetary policy advice should be constructed when economic models and data are uncertain. He is interested in models of the financial channels of the transmission mechanism.
