Bank Note Security Features

Original Canadian Journey series $5 and $10 notes

All Canadian bank notes have security features that are reliable, quick, and easy to use. By making it a habit to check two or more of these features whenever you accept cash, you can avoid being stuck with a counterfeit.

Remember that verifying the mere presence of a security feature is not enough. You need to make sure that it works as it should when you tilt or look through the note. If a note seems suspicious to you, compare it with a note that you know is genuine.

Pass your cursor over the numbers on the bank note images to see the security features.

Security features:
  1. Maple leaves
  2. Hidden number
  3. Raised ink (intaglio)
  4. UV (fluorescence)

Hidden number See-through number. Hold and slightly tilt the note at eye level. The number 5 appears.
Raised Ink Raised ink (intaglio).Touch the words BANK OF CANADA · BANQUE DU CANADA, the large number 5, the portrait, and the coat of arms. They feel thicker.
Maple leaves Maple leaves. Tilt the note. The three maple leaves shift from pale to shiny gold.
UV UV (fluorescence). When verifying the UV feature, always check other security features too. Look at the note under UV (ultraviolet) light. The coat of arms, and the words FIVE CINQ and BANK OF CANADA BANQUE DU CANADA glow in blue over the portrait. Red fibres are scattered across both sides of the note.
