William Black

William Black was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Bank of Canada in October 2006.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Mr. Black graduated from Dalhousie University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science degree, and completed his actuarial training in 1974.

Mr. Black retired in 2004 after nine years as President and Chief Executive Officer of Maritime Life, where he worked for 34 years. He has been Chairman of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce and served nine years on the board of the IWK Health Centre, including two years as chair.

Mr. Black is currently involved in a number of organizations. He sits on the boards of Symphony Nova Scotia (Vice-Chair), the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Public Affairs (Chairman), Dalhousie University (Vice-Chair), the Shaw Group (a Halifax-based resource and property development company), Standard Life of Canada (Deputy Chair), and Nova Scotia Business Inc. (a provincial Crown corporation).
